At Floor Coverings International Southwest Metro, we love bringing you creative insight and perspectives from bloggers who are kind enough to share their stories and design wisdom. Today we have an interview with Holly Browning of Down to Earth Style, who graciously let us showcase her DIY expertise.
1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
Well, in a nutshell – I am a mom of twin boys, a wife to my high school sweetheart, and I love, love, love to make our house comfortable. Turns out, it’s so comfortable that my kids never want to leave (I say – “you have to go to school!” every morning.)
Spending time outside is relaxing to me. I am always reading a book, mostly memoirs or historical fiction.
2. Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
When my boys went to kindergarten I had some time to myself. I started making furniture and decorating for friends. In a short amount of time I had a very busy schedule creating and doing what I love. It turned into a small business that worked well with my family and made me very happy!
This is an old desk turned upside down and made into a rolling kitchen island, for example.
I created a blog to journal my projects and designs so that my family and friends, who mostly lived 2000 miles away, would believe me when I’d say – “Yes I build furniture!” “I use a table saw.” or “I want a nail gun for Christmas.” Apparently it was hard for them to imagine me physically lifting large tools in and out of my Ford and actually knowing how to use them.
Blogging has been life changing, really. I have met so many like minded friends through blogging. I believe some of the nicest people on earth are bloggers. It’s fun to share and support one another.
3. How would you describe your design style?
Style…it changes and evolves constantly. My inspiration comes mostly from Cottage and Country/Farmhouse themed magazines and blogs but I like to mix my own twist of rustic, livability and affordability into it.
Once somebody called my style Rustic-Chic. Sometimes I think the word grunge can be thrown in there too.
Now that my family and I have moved to the mountain range out west I am loving Nordic style. My natural surroundings and love of animals help inspire my designs.
4. Where do you find most of your inspiration?
Nothing inspires me more than nature, as I said before. Pine cones, logs or greens are displayed in my home year round. And….this may sound strange but another way I find inspiration is by checking out bathrooms in savvy restaurants. It’s amazing how much funky style there is in the hidden rooms out back.
This bedroom redo was inspired by a restaurant bathroom in CT.
Driving around looking at houses is a favorite pass time (my kids will attest for that). If some motivation to clean the yard or freshening up the porch is needed, a drive through a quaint neighborhood will do the trick.
5. Tell us about a recent project you’re proud of.
A recent project that turned out better than I expected was my chair table made from a bar stool frame. I love an idea that is fast, easy, serves a purpose and adds a unique “cool” factor at the same time.
This project only took me about 30 minutes because I keep scraps of wood around in the garage just in case I feel an urge to build.
Well, that was a big nutshell! Thanks for taking time to read a little bit about the blogger behind Down to Earth Style and thanks to Floor Coverings International for the opportunity to share with you.
